Bangalore’s Weather, Nachos and Art: In conversation with Alicia Souza

Alicia Souza is a well-known artist, illustrator, and entrepreneur, who creates vibrant drawings and doodles which address a variety of topics, but which are all fun, funny, whimsical and colourful (we can’t get enough of them!). Indeed, it’s quite probable that you’ve seen her designs pop up on your Facebook timeline, on your colleague’s calendar planner, or a friend’s phone cover.

We caught up with Alicia for a quick chat to talk about her art and life as an illustrator in Bangalore.

1) Tell us a little of your beginnings and journey as an illustrator and artist

Well I drew as much as any other child, but I always say, I never really stopped. My journey trickled over university, coffee shops, a bank, a move over continents and I finally settled into being a freelance illustrator in Bangalore and also starting my own little webstore last year.

2) What do you want to express through your art?

I usually want to send out a message or relay something funny that happened or something that I came across. I feel like they are illustrated thoughts sometimes.

3) What do you love most about your work?

I get to do what I love literally ALL DAY. Sometimes I pinch myself because I got it so wonderful.

4) Which other Bangalorean or Indian artists inspire you?

I don’t get to see his art too often but I’m absolutely in love with Paul Fernandes, his art and him as a person. Just darling!

5) What do you like most about Bangalore?

Can I say weather like the rest of the Bangaloreans? Truly, it’s the besttttt!

6) What do you think are the advantages of Bangalore are as far as freelancing and illustrating is concerned?

I think Bangalore is a beautiful place to freelance. I think the community is strong with start-ups, entrepreneurs and freelancers, which makes the place so fantastic to live and work.

7) What is your go to snack/drink to sustain your creative juices?
