Introducing Bombay Perfumery, a contemporary fragrance house

Mannan Gandhi has a nose for scents. The last four decades kept him busy sourcing prized ingredients for international perfume houses, but now he’s decided to dedicate his finely tuned olfactory senses to his pet project: the Bombay Perfumery. So much so that he’s even shifted base to open an office in the Mecca of perfumeries – Grasse, France.

Gandhi believes that Indian brands haven’t really been able to make an impression in the high-end perfume market, and hopes his avant-garde, contemporary twist on fragrances using indigenous ingredients will fill that vacuum. To that end, he spends his days travelling across the country, looking for high-quality jasmine and sandalwood in Madurai, or crossing the ocean for a quick jaunt to Haiti in search of vetiver, a root that exudes an earthy delicate aroma and happens to be a perennial favorite of perfumeries.

The people at Bombay Perfumery are convinced that consumers are now ready to make the shift from the traditional to a whiff of something unusual, like their creation inspired by masala chai brewed with a hint of lemongrass! The company will begin its innings with this signature perfume and eight others for men and women, slated to be priced at Rs. 3,800 for a 100 ml bottle, and grow from scent to scent.
