An Instagram account that captures the beauty of Mumbai’s Everyday

Chirag Wakaskar is an Instagrammer just like us. However, unlike many of us, he’s realized the hidden power of Instagram, as a platform – not just for selfies and pictures of food you’d kill for – to showcase the beauty of everyday life. Wakaskar uses the medium to spotlight people, places and seemingly normal occurrences in his city, Mumbai.

Wakaskar was inspired by photographer Daniel Berehulak, who took pictures of the everyday and made them seem extraordinary.  From then on, armed with his camera phone, he started to regularly take pictures of the city and upload them on Instagram. Now, he curates photographs, taken by amateur and established photographers, for the ‘Everyday Mumbai’ blog and Instagram account.

The page is filled with images of the mundane and the commonplace: men hard at work in the dhobi ghat, the Ganesh Visarjan celebrations, people clinging to train door frames and children playing in the street. And yet, through the lens, the featured portraits are arresting; each is a small story of life, love, joy, worship and strife and everything in between, in this busy city.

“I have always avoided the usual clichéd photos of Indians taken by tourists.” he states. “Everyday Mumbai has a unique blend of images that showcase the city as it is.”
