Will Tamil film ‘Visaranai’ fetch a coveted Oscar for India?

Beating 28 films, including Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Fan’, Shahid Kapoor’s ‘Udta Punjab’, and the Marathi movie ‘Sairat’, the Tamil film ‘Visaranai’ has been nominated as India’s official entry in the Best Foreign Language Film category for the 2017 Academy Awards.

Produced by actor-filmmaker Dhanush, and directed by Vetrimaran, the movie is a crime-thriller based on the novel ‘Lock Up’ by M. Chandrakumar. The writer based the book on his own experience of being arrested along with three friends by the police who were looking for suspects in a high-profile robbery, because they were labourers and therefore suitable and disposable.

The police then beat them mercilessly over a course of 13 days to take the blame for the crime in question. “Our aim was to portray realistically how the poor and hapless suffer at the hands of a system that is totally unaccountable,” Vettrimaran said.

The raw realism of police brutality and corruption that Visaranai portrays, saw the movie winning the Amnesty International Italia Award, and laurels at the 63rd National Film Awards this year. Now it remains to be seen if Visaranai will be able to bring home the coveted Oscar also.
