Street kids get to celebrate their birthdays, thanks to ‘Happy Birthday Bharath'

We’ve all seen the tiny tots begging at signal crossings, taking shelter under flyovers or loitering aimlessly on pavements. They’re a common sight, almost part of the cityscape, along with concrete structures, cars, and crowds, except that it shouldn’t be “normal” for a child to be living on the streets. Unfortunately for many, that’s the only life they’ll ever know.

On his commute to work one day, Avijit Bajpai, a marketing professional from Delhi, noticed a bunch of street kids frolicking around with an empty cake box and some party caps that had been thrown away. This innocent, poignant image left a strong impression on him. Spurred by a desire to make a difference, Bajpai along with his wife Sonam, used social media to garner support from like- minded friends. Thus in June 2015, ‘Happy Birthday Bharat’, a group that celebrates birthdays of slum and street children, was born.

Since neither the kids nor their parents have an inkling as to their exact birth dates, the celebrations are held in the spirit of ‘one for all’, and the cake simply bears the name Bharat, a homage of sorts to thousands of homeless children across India. Birthday paraphernalia such as gifts, games, clothes etc. is gathered by volunteers, and every Sunday the group goes to a new location for a day of revelry with youngsters who have never had a birthday party hosted for them.

The group has gained popularity via Facebook and Twitter, and the circle of support has expanded. Following Delhi’s example, Wilson Pereira and Kunal Bauva began a similar initiative in Mumbai with the support of their friends. Donations received are in the form of cash, supplies or an investment of time to help organise activities.

Just as a single candle can light several others, Avijit’s heart-warming idea has spread happiness to hundreds of kids. Making them smile, is now a piece of cake.
