Saving the environment, one cuppa coffee at a time

Saving the environment, one cuppa coffee at a time

For many people, coffee is a necessary part of their daily grind, one that they can’t even imagine starting their day without. But chances are that you, like most coffee afficionados, probably don’t know about the immense imprint that coffee farms can have on the environment. Every cup of coffee is said to destroy 3 sq.cm of rainforest, and with Indians consuming 1.4 billion cups of coffee daily, it’s indicative of causing a latte problems (pun intended) in the long run.

In response, Arshiya Bose, a PhD holder in geography and environmental science from the University of Cambridge, founded Black Baza Coffee as an endeavour to make the production of coffee more environmentally friendly, and conserve forests, wildlife and water in the process.

Bangalore-based Black Baza collaborates with over 300 Indian growers to follow biodiversity-friendly farming, and then markets their products to urban or international consumers. Not only does this ensure that farmers get their due, but it also gives them an incentive to not cut down forests to grow coffee. Black Baza also works with various national and international firms to ensure the well-being of plant species, environment and coffee producers.

So, if you’d like to help save the environment, one coffee cup at a time, Black Baza does the trick. You can choose from a variety of flavours as well, the Black Baza Roast, Luna Roast and the Aspire to Otter, making this option all the sweeter.

Find out more about Black Baza on their site and you can also follow their updates on Facebook .
