Change is afoot: the KHA Foundation brings experimental contemporary dance to life

Experimental contemporary dance is an art; one that entwines tradition and innovation, clean technique and raw dynamism, intimacy and openness – but one that is still shaky on its feet so to speak, in India. But now, thanks to the KHA foundation, this powerful dance form is finally gaining momentum. This public charitable trust was founded by Nakula Somana, a freelance movement artist, who believed in creating a single platform for artists from all over the world to meet, collaborate and create new forms of performance that combine dance, acting, music and yoga.

The word ‘Kha’ means ‘transformative space’ in Sanskrit and was founded in 2012. Loyal to their vision, the foundation works with people from different communities and cultures to nurture their creative talents, and build a network of collaboration that will help them to perform within the country and abroad.

Its eleven permanent members along with numerous temporary members as well as volunteers teach and promote new forms of expression in terms of movement, design and visuals by engaging in art experiments, training and performances. For instance, the group visits rural areas to teach different movement art forms to school children, and conduct workshops as well. Definitely steps in the right direction for this exciting dance form.
